Ultrasonography has played an increasingly important role in diagnostics over the past decade. Software sophistication has allowed wide-ranging generation of reliable, cost-effective, easily accessible, non-intrusive and safe images. Recognising the potential for enhancing the quality of diagnosis, accuracy of procedures and screening-out of life-threatening illness, Sandown Health Centre launched a community appeal for its own ultrasound facility. As a result a new machine with three probes (abdominal, endo and small part) was acquired. GPs have undergone basic ultrasound training and, in conjunction with Diagnostic Imaging at St. Mary's Hospital, have introduced a weekly outreach clinic. This entry was a finalist and category winner in the 2011 NHS Isle of Wight Awards. For more information visit www.iow.nhs.uk/awards.
