Inside every villain there's a spirit
Behind every plane crash there's a man who can't steer it
There are cheaters and liars and thieves and thugs,
There's a man who writes stories about every person he mugs,
A girl who carves freedom into her arms,
Every desperate boy who sets off an alarm.
The faces that haunt you from behind bathroom mirrors
The ones who stare hard and bring you to tears
There's the ghost in the attic who's misunderstood
The boy who can't eat, can't sleep without knocking on wood
There's a man whose face was broken with glass
The priest who accepts your confessions at mass
The pathological liars,
The heroine buyers,
The ones who stab tires
And the young abused girls who live to start fires.

Inside every villain there's a spirit
And there's a hundred closed ears who don't want to hear it.
When Hitler rose to power,
People extinguished every hour,
And endless tears went sour,
Over the lives he devoured,
No one stopped to check
If the voices in his head caused the effect.
It's easy to reject their humanity
To avoid your own insanity.
Inside every villain there's a spirit
Everyone who was tempted and swore they'd never go near it
The babysitter who touched you,
The best friend that left you,
The father who punched you,
The teacher that judged you,
The girl whose art they stomped into the snow
The boyfriend who didn't understand when you said 'no'
The broken families that come together
The desperate hearts we try to tether
The writers, the singers, the musicians, and painters
The ones with eating disorders and the attention seeking fainters
When left to their own devices
Can create such a beautiful crisis

Inside ever villain there's a spirit
The women who wear heavy eye liner with the intention to smear it
There's the people who invent new lives online
And old men who keep company with cheap wine
There are sinners,
There are winners,
Housewives who refuse to make dinners,
And grandfather fairy-tale spinners.
Who all have secrets to hide.
Everyone is looking for someone in whom they can confide.
Instead they tell their stories to walls,
And then go to work in filthy overalls.
Inside every villain there's a spirit
And yet everyone has been taught to fear it.
The people who preach with silver tongues
Like ladders that are expected to be climbed without rungs.
A council built on melodramatics
That pick and choose history, forgetting chromatics.
Apostles and saints and vindictive dictators,
Prophets and wise men and holy impersonators,
Women stuck in dead marriages become baiters,
Old men who once reigned are turned into beggars.
And the world has forgotten the truth
As if the act of being human itself is uncouth.

Inside every villain there's a spirit.
And yet everyone has been taught to fear it.
