The unique five arm crossing at Pandora Road, in Napier, New Zealand. Here we see the sequence that the barriers operate in each time a train passes. The first arm is to clear the roundabout of road traffic prior to the other four arms coming down.

  • Neat! Why did that one gate go down so early the raise back up?

  • @metraF40PH163 - The early one is to give traffic entering the roundabout that is backed up across the tracks, the opportunity to get clear of the tracks before the barriers activate, by having the early barrier stop other traffic from entering the roundabout.

  • @GeoffBlackmore I assume this is to keep traffic signals from having to be installed on the roundabout to provide "pre-emption" to keep the crossing clear?

  • @fgossage - Yes, that's correct.
