La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is a great shallow water dive site if the surf isn't too big, you can find parking, you don't mind the steps down to the beach and you're OK with crowds. All that being said, once you make it into the water you can choose between staying shallow and exploring the eel grass, venturing out into the kelp beds in search of the illusive Giant Black Seabass, or exploring the rocky reefs looking for creatures large and small. Add to this the possibility of running into a playful seal or getting buzzed by a soupfin shark and there's a good possibility you're coming back in with some exciting stories to tell.

La Jolla Cove is a great place to dive but if there's surf breaking in the Cove avoid it as the exit can be difficult because the beach is fairly steep and the sand soft. If you swim out to Buoy A you're still only in less than 30ft of water. The whole dive here will be less than 45ft. The shark seen in the video is not typically dangerous (I think only five recorded attacks) unless provoked. Don't attempt to touch it, for instance.

Fabulous! I live just north of here (O.C.) and some friends and I just got our licenses through our High School and were looking for a cool place to dive. About how deep were you down most of the time, I only feel comfortable going to maybe 60ft right now as I'm still a beginner...And was that shark at all dangerous to people?
