Two Georgians, who were kidnapped on February 27 from Kareli district of Georgias Shida Kartli region, still remain in captivity of Ossetian separatists for the time being. The kidnappers demand a ransom in the amount of 6 thousand GEL in return to their setting free.

The Georgian law enforcers make no comments until the incident is exhausted. Locals of Chvrinisi settlement claim that criminals are often intimidating them from the adjacent Java region, the territory controlled by separatists of South Ossetia (Georgias one of two conflict zones).

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs commented on the abduction of two Georgians from Kareli district of Georgias Shida Kartli region.

On 27 February 2009, at about 16:30, armed militias of the Tskhinvali proxy regime attacked a car moving from the village of Koda, Kareli district in the direction of the village of Chvrinisi and kidnapped four passengers: Davit Kapanadze, Irakli Kapanadze, Demur Chigladze and Dato Sadzaglishvili. The Kidnappers took the aforesaid people to the Russian-occupied territory of Georgia. Later they released Irakli Kapanadze and Dato Sadzaglishvili. For the release of the other two hostages, the kidnappers demand a ransom of 6000 euro.

The aforesaid incident indicates clearly that criminal actions and provocations continue to take place in the Tskhinvali region and on its adjacent territories under the patronage of the Russian occupation troops, which aim at reaching further escalation of the situation and intimidation of the population.

Along with the forced expulsion of 50 Georgian families from the Gali districts village of Otobaia by the Sokhumi proxy regime and Russian occupiers on 26 February 2009, the aforesaid incident can be viewed as a clear evidence that the Russian Federation and the proxy regime under its control are far from intending to put in place the mechanisms agreed during the Geneva Talks on 17-18 February 2009 and to stabilize the situation in the region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expresses its extreme concern and strong protest over this yet another culpable action carried out on Georgias occupied territory and insists on the immediate release of the abducted civilians. Given the increasing gravity of the incident, it is necessary that the international community do all in its power in order to ensure speedy solution of the aforesaid problem and avoid further recurrence of similar incidents.
