Recorded on September 20, 1926 in New York City. Poole sings and plays the banjo with Posey Rorer on fiddle and Ron Harvey on guitar on this tune about the McKinley assasination. Poole and his Ramblers were one of the most popular old-time string bands during the late twenties. Poole has proven to be enormously influential with his 3-finger banjo playing, which developed later into the famous Earl Scruggs bluegrass-style. Poole was quite the hell-raiser, dying at the age of 39 in 1931; it appears he was invited to appear in a film and Poole's resulting celebration led to a fatal drunken binge.

  • charlie poole is coole

  • @xJasbo agreed, sir!

  • Charlie was my grandmother's, Emma Poole Porter, first cousin. They grew up much like brother and sister and were close until the day he died.

  • @Lisa8364 does she have any interesting stories about him? such a shame he died so young :(

  • G-ma passed away before I was born. A few stories passed down though. Most people know his 3 finger style was because of hand injury from playing ball as a child. There's a story about him riding a horse (drunk) up a staircase one night after he had played. He visited with G-ma when he got the movie deal and she tried to talk to him about his drinking but he told her he couldn't play unless he was drinking. She was said to have been heartbroken when he died.
