This hauling chantey, so believes Hugill, probably grew out of "Across the Rockies." It evokes the mid 19th century era of emigration to America in packet ships, crossing the Atlantic.

I leave out one of the possible lines, "Mothers and sweethearts don't ye cry; Sisters and brother say goodbye." I feel it is too sentimental in an "Irish" kind of way (!) and a bit out of character with usual chantey tone.
