It was much more fun and easy than I've thought!
I remember trying to compile a 2.4 kernel on my redhat 8 three years ago with no results...

Here's a brief summary of the steps:

- download: kernel.org
- unpack: tar -jxf linux-2.6.V.tar.bz2
- configure: make xconfig (the fun part!)
- compile: make
- install: make install && make modules_install
- make ramdisk: (in /boot)
mkinitramfs -o initrd.img-2.6.20.V 2.6.20.V
- add entery to grub (usually done automagically)
- done, reboot!

wow... you compiled already written code you ledge... why don't you find all the c programs on the internet and compile those too...add some noobish comments in to make them witty while you have random file names scroll down the screen as they're being outputted... that'll add to your 1337 status. that was two years ago, you insensitive clod! I know C and have looked at kernel source code since 2003. I've yet to go through Linux Device Drivers though, bringing lame excuses like "not enough disk space on root."

How much takes you to compile it?, i mean im a Linux User, but i have no time to compile it, i just wanna know if hardware does a difference in compiling time/speed or is relative similar on some machines.

About ten minutes on my computer. It can take much longer depending on how many features and drivers you selected to compile. I remember once it was around 45 minutes on older computer.

no. compiling 2.4 is (slightly?) different, especially for the ps2! Maybe you can find tutorials on how to do it, and see if someone had done it before or if it's even possible.

you know if you add the -j64 flag to make, it'll compile faster, right?

$ make -j64 menuconfig

$ make -j64

$ make -j64 modules

# make -j64 modules_install
