In autumn 1944, 280,000 Soviet soldiers and officers perished while liberating Estonia from the Nazis, and in 1945 Tallinn's authorities announced a contest to chose the best design for a memorial which was won by sculptor Ann Ross and architect Arnold Alas, both ethnic Estonians. Their Mourning Soldier, whose model, Vello Royanga, was also a native Estonian Red Army soldier, was picked from 20 candidates. Two years later, the monument was unveiled in a park in central Tallinn to mark the communal grave of 13 Soviet soldiers. In the mid 1970s thepark was altered to make way for an extended highway, and new bronze plaques were fixed on the memorial.

  • Russia still has Orwellian totalitarian society. The government makes their citizens hate Georgia one month and Estonia the next in a pathetic attempt to blind the people from their own problems.

280,000 Soviet soldiers and officers perished while liberating Estonia from the Nazis. WRONG.

280,000 Soviet soldiers and officers perished while invading and annexing the country of Estonia.RIGHT

  • "Soviet's blood was spilt in many European countries" LOL bet they would have spilt less than half if they weren't trying to occupy other countries so much, "Liberating Estonia from the Nazis" Lol whatever, Russians didn't liberated Estonia, instead they were another occupier just like Nazis to gain more power. The reason they were paying respect to Brown soldier back then was because Estonia was occupied and if they protested against it like they did today then they would have been killed.

  • @1001ORAO Russia Today really isn't the best source to understand what happened back then. The riots started because of the excavation and relocation of the soldiers and the statue to a military graveyard, but people were just looting and breaking stuff. That is not protesting.

In addition to that, the prime minister did not support vandalising/breaking up the statue, he supported moving it to a more proper location.

And finally, it really isn't "liberating", if you occupy the country for 50y

  • The poor Soviet troops raped 2 million women in East-Germany. And every year, people are celebrating that on 9th may...

  • And because of russians and other nations supported collapse of USSR and BECAUSE ELCIN gave freedom to most countries like Estonia, Latvia, etc - you citizens of this countries must remember and respect that, because you never fight for it, like chechens done. And officially respect them, cause they not talking shit, they fighting till last man.

  • And another thing - Estonia and Finland were part of Royal Russia, so it is your own fault that you lost the fight. How many countries done same? How many of them were have slaves? England, France, Spain, USA, China - absolutely everyone used their power against dif. countries. Why you silent? Why everyone silent? Because of money.

  • By the way estonians were fighting on Soviet site, for they world and originally this statue was made from estonian guy figure. So estonian goverment splitting estonians and "russianspeaking" (they are not russians, they have different nationality:ukranians, belorussian, etc) So the point in that was to take control over all "country", cause law was changed straight away. So today if any of estonian citizen will go on strike - they will powned. It is pure freedom, same like anywhere...enjoy.

  • just one thing: If not soviets, most of commentators would not exist. Who would exist - slaves of nazis - that is still the choice of Baltic and some others.

Today - war of propaganda, what for? To make YOU DIE in FIGHT FOR NOTHING.

Because WW2 ends long time ago. Now new war - for YOUR property and right to live in peace.

  • Memorials to dead soldiers OK...memorials to political regimes NO....

  • Estonia for Estonians. Latvians for Latvia. Lithuania for Lithuania

    Baltics for the Balts.

soviets = nazis = lying murderous filth

  • soviet shits
