That sounds superb (though there's a slight whisle, as though a gasket is leaking somewhere or have you fitted a turbo??). 540 owner myself, and though its superb in every way, the only disappointment is that it doesn't make enough of a V8 growl. You've managed to solve that one! Has it made any difference to performance?

Thank you:)I found a small leak that may account for the whistle.Performance is not degraded,i have not noticed any disadvantages,i have had this system almost one year. Some mods will be,shortening the X-pipe section,replacing the tailpipes with polished stainless ones.I have documented the project it would be nice to be able to share it with international 540 owners, if i find some E39 540 rewrite it in english and submit it.

I made the dual exhaustsystem myself, cost is around 250$. The problem was designing it without having to make any chassis mods.

i would like to help you and me. I can help to translate and write or produce a videotutorial of your dual/duplex exhaust solution. I also have a 540i with the challange to build a dual exhaust starting with my new stainless steel 4in1 headers, which will help the engine breath more freely at first start.

Haven't you noticed yet that fuel prices don't remain high so long when they're in the sky? Remember the last year, and see the prices now. I guess very few people are scrambling for diesel cars in the states. And why? Gas is not so expensive, and prefer the comfort of a gas engine. However, BMW diesels are truly great in their genre. So, why won't you go for a 335d right now, if you like it so much? Maybe you're not convinced enough?

Once fuel goes up in the states again like it was last year I'll trade in my 540 for a 335d. V8s are nice, but there's no comparing the two. The 335d makes over 100 lbs more torque than the V8 and gets 15 more MPG. Sorry, but diesel is the future. Now we need to make them sound a little better!
