Panhandling, Fayetteville NC

Panhandling has become a serious issue in our city. Whether there are people who say they are homeless veterans standing on the side of the road asking for help; a father who says he needs money to buy school supplies for his kids; or a woman who says she just needs a few bucks to get how to her ailing mother. You want to help, right? Well if you really want to help, you won't give them any money. Lt. Randy Podobinski told us more about the newly adopted Panhandling Ordinance and how we can make sure our money goes to help people, rather than helping them buy drugs or alcohol.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. The panhandling initiative is designed to keep those who continually ask for money from interacting with people in high traffic shopping areas and in the downtown. Studies have shown that with few exceptions, the money received by a panhandler goes to pay for his or her habit (drugs, alcohol, etc) and NOT for the general welfare of the recipient. That's why people are encouraged to give to service organizations instead of panhandlers.

This video shows the problems we're facing this country. Instead of proper rehab for drug and alcohol dependence, we'd rather throw them in jail. So the police give them a pamphlet.. how many of those people can read, or have a cell phone to call or have a car to drive them? Funding for those much needed social services are being stripped away, so you can give them all the pamphlets in the world.. but if the services can't provide, then it's useless.
