He wasn't out of his realm, it was the clueless corporate TV execs who were out of their realm when they messed with his vision. As stated by spinozareagan he had no intention of resolving the murder right away, if ever, it was the network suits that ruined things by insisting on that.

He was out of his realm. He basically F'd up when he thought his show had staying power after the solving. The show in my mind was so tv it smelled like money.

It was a mistake to solve the murder on Laura Palmer so early on, if not at all.
