An interesting fact is mentioned by Andrew Ferguson in his (excellent) book about Lotus & Indy....the offset suspension made only a minor difference to the way the car coped with the banking yet had a major affect on how the car could be brought back under control if and when it slid or spun. :)
Later developments of Indy cars saw handling aspects covered by different tyre diameters and such things as "jacking".
(The 1968 Type 56 turbines had no offset).
