Skye Boat Song

Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclouds rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the claymore could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead in Culloden's field.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Burned are their homes, exile and death
Scatter the loyal men;
Yet e'er the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

  • This is one of the songs that impressed me so much during my childhood in Ireland almost seventy years ago. Wonderful to hear it again so marvellously sung...

  • Most enjoyable...

  • Just returned from a holiday on The Isle of Skye, somewhere I wish I had visited many years ago, this amazing version makes me want to go back today. A wonderful place and this song is sung by a wonderful man.

  • Years since I have heard this song by Paul. Great....

  • A sad and lovely song sung by the amazing Paul Robeson. Thank you very much for posting this.

  • Because this is such an awesome song, sung by such an awesome guy, I'm giving this, a free Replay button! 0:00

  • Such a nice rich deep voice! I could listen to him all day if I was able to! Glad no one disliked this or I'd think there'd be a serious problem with them lol.

  • @gammondog He could be gargling with tar and it'd still be the best version, just because it's Paul Robeson :-D

  • It's a shame they left out the verse that mentions the battle of Culloden. Still this is my favorite recording of Skye Boat because of Robeson's legendary voice.

  • meraviglioso (wonderful) !!:)
