This is my cat Coby. He was a stray that we took in and the Doc says he is about 4. Well the doc also said he was perfectly healthy.
UPDATE
Coby is in perfect health (dispite being fed too well) but a vet sent me a message they may help others with cats like this
"He seems to have about 30-36 breaths per minute, which is normal for a cat, although at the high end of the normal range. He's also not panting or open-mouth breathing, which is good. If a cat ever pants it's usually a sign of major distress, unless they are doing it while horsing around. Does he ever pant or open-mouth breathe?

My impression after watching the video is, assuming his breathing is quiet like it seems, while it is an abnormal breathing pattern (sharp intake, almost as if he's hiccuping), his rate is normal and he seems quite relaxed. Also, there are no audible wheezes, which would be the case if he had asthma. Asthmatic cats cough quite frequently as well, and resort to panting in extreme cases.

Since you got him as an adult kitty, I'm guessing perhaps he once had a major trauma, either to his ribs or his lungs. And he's recovered from it, only with a bit of abnormal breathing. It's possible he had bad pneumonia or a collapsed lung at some point, or possibly a broken rib. There are lots of other things that could be causing it as well. But, if he's eating well, maintaining his weight, is happy, and this isn't worsening, then I would not worry too much about it. It helps to know that your vet checked him out and he seemed fine at the time. If your vet had heard a heart murmur or muffled heart sounds or wheezes or crackles, he would have let you know. A feline leukemia test is a good idea, but if you don't have the money I understand, and honestly that's just a starting point. After that test, I'd be interested in seeing some chest x-rays of Coby.

Again, if he's not progressing and doesn't have any of the above problems, it's probably something unique to him and not anything of real concern."
_Thanks again brandon for the helpful comments

  • @SpaceMuppet007 yes i went to the vet and they said everything is fine. he is still kicking it having the time of his life. thank you for your concern

  • @Grendelmonster8u omg! that is terrible! I am sorry to hear that! I took him to the vet way back when and they said there wasnt an issue. i didnt have the money to get test done on him either. I dont know if it would be the same condition or if he is in pain but he seems to just be happy laying in the sun all day. I would say to make him as comfortable as possible and let him live out the rest of his life. maybe start saving up money a little at a time. whatever you decide! Good Luck!

  • This looks how my cat is breathing. Brought him to ER today, he has fluid around his lungs not giving him enough space to breathe fully. They drained the fluid, but that did not help. He may have a mass underneath. To do all sorts of tests would be $4,000. I cannot afford that. They say he's in pain but I'm not ready to euthanize just yet, but probably will have to very soon. He's only 4 1/2 yrs old. I was hoping it was asthma which can be dealt with, but it's not. ):

  • Hi Neongirl,

I am sorry to say so, but this does not look like a normal cat breathing at all. But since it has been posted in 09, I suppose you had already gone to the vet?
