A lot of people like the faster versions better. On this song in particular, Slow vs fast have completely different effects. This would be a more romanticized version. Rostropovich's version is slightly faster, and in some places bouncier. Yo-Yo Ma's recording, when he was younger, was very fast and bouncy, but his newer recording is a bit like this one. I personally prefer Maisky's, because I can feel the most emotion whit his. It's like he's singing the song with his soul.
