During the 9/1/09 Haddon Heights, NJ council meeting, three residents approached the mic to discuss their concerns regarding Mayor Alexander and a civil suit filed against him which set forth facts reflecting loan fraud. Other items concerning possible misconduct by the mayor were also voiced by these residents, including the revelation that the the town's solicitor was secretly representing the mayor in this loan fraud lawsuit (and possibly other legal cases). Considering items on the new business agenda that evening involved giving the mayor more access and control over large budgetary items, these residents had to voice their concerns at that portion of the public comment agenda.
These three residents were exercising their freedom of speech rights. Despite the civility and respectful conduct of these three residents who spoke in this public forum (for 18 minutes), their conduct was publicly mischaracterized and condemned by a member of the Haddon Heights Council, and described as lawless.
Fortunately, the meeting was videotaped and the public can see how these residents used the forum of a public meeting appropriately, and for appropriate reasons.
