Democrat Taj Clayton knows about struggle and hard work. He grew up in a small, working class community. His parents labored in a glass factory to provide for their four children. At just 12 years old, Taj began working too. After his dad lost his job, Taj mowed lawns around town to help his parents make ends meet. As he got older, he picked up other jobs and worked his way through high school.

As a member of the first generation in his family to attend college, Taj worked his way through Harvard by cleaning dormitory bathrooms and sweeping staircases, among other odd jobs. Taj graduated with Honors after making the Dean's List every semester and went on to receive his law degree from Harvard Law School.

Today, Taj is an attorney at the international law firm of Fish & Richardson. He has been recognized as a "Rising Star" by Texas Super Lawyers magazine. Prior to joining Fish & Richardson, Taj was a Law Clerk to Chief Judge Mark L. Wolf of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Prior to his legal career, Taj worked for the e-procurement consulting firm, ICG Commerce, and served as a Management Council Intern at the National Football League.

Taj has been happily married to his college sweetheart, Tonika, for 11 years and is the proud father of two daughters and a son. In his spare time, Taj serves on the Board of the Dallas Children's Theater and volunteers with the Dallas KIPP Charter School and the Circle of Support program.

TRANSCRIPT:

I love when people ask me why I'm running. For me, it's personal.

I'm running for my daughter Raiya. I promised her on the day she was born I'd do all I could to make sure she'd have every opportunity to succeed. I want to keep that promise to her and every child in the district.

I'm running for my nephew Cameron. Like me, he's a product of the public school system. I'm running to make sure that he and all of our kids graduate with a world-class education.

I'm running for my dad. He moved our family to South Dallas County to give us a better life after getting a new job at a glass factory. I'm running so that families continue to see South Dallas County as a place to build a better life.

I'm running for Verda Haynes. She lost her home in Katrina. I'm running to make sure she doesn't lose her new home in a financial disaster that we can prevent.

I'm running for Rodney at Karmedic Automotive. He's a small business owner who employs folks right here in this community. I'm running so that he and other entrepreneurs have the support they need to help grow our local economy.

I'm running to continue my support of our President who needs stronger representation in Congress to advance the agenda of the American people.

I'm running for my family. I'd give my life for my wife, my daughters, and my newborn son. I know you would do the same for yours, so I'm Taj Clayton and I'm running for you.
