Great video, I found it motivating and informative. I hope to put some of your tips and suggestions to use.

For those of us who try to mix making with education, it's not enough to make cool stuff. We have to be able to articulate why the hands-on aspect is important. The people on this video are well spoken and they're actually doing it, not just talking about it. I find this helpful when I'm not talking to the choir.

As for the whiners, not every video is for every person. Pick what's for you and ignore the rest--and grow up.

We're in the middle of a 3D printer build at a project-based club at a local elementary school. With guidance, the kids do everything from planning and accounting to sourcing parts and documentation, and we let them to make mistakes along the way. A lot of what the maker team has been doing as the other teams got up and running was taking machines apart to see how they work -- and also scavenging for useful parts. They just love it -- it's an amazing experience. Details, if interested.

My experience with teaching kids (and adults too) has taught me that if kids enjoy being at school for any reason they will do better in ALL of their subjects. Having a Make Class or a Tinkering Class is just the kind of thing that so many kids need to be engaged and actually enjoying themselves at school.

If they like being at school they will do better. And Making is fun.
