Frontman and guitarist Gregory Vitale, of Toronto-based rock band Flowerchild, began recording Pleasantly Cursed, the band's just-launched debut album, in the spring of 2008, venturing all the way to Ireland to produce the project with The Tea Party's Jeff Martin at his Kingdom Studios recording studio in County Cork Ireland. "If you've been to Ireland you know its beauty," says Vitale, who gathers material for his lyrics from personal experience and critical moments in ones life. "Rolling hills, lush greenery, imagery, mysticism—it all provided a landscape where I could escape and set myself apart from the rest of the world." Co-writing the album with friend and guitarist Simon Jones, Vitale turned to Martin, who's now working as a producer and solo artist, to also play bass, lead guitar and keyboards on the album.

So how did two Canadian rockers end up recording together in a small Irish village near the Atlantic Ocean? Fate. "A friend of mine Renee, who was The Tea Party's stylist and creative partner, called me up one day saying she had a dream and wanted to hear what I had been working on," reflects Vitale, who has played in bands and been surrounded by music since his school days. "After that evening we sent a package to Jeff in Ireland and a few months later I was on a flight to County Cork. Since then Jeff and I have become very close friends."

Vitale, whose mentor is his cousin, Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Domenic Troiano, sites Led Zepplin, Jeff Buckley and Rush as major influences on his work. Vitale recently founded his own record label called Ossington Rose, to be distributed by Awesome/EMI, and is working towards launching a few up-and-coming artists in spring of 2011. Hip hop artist Elbert Fontaine, Vitale's high school rock band Bacchus and Kush, an improvised electronic outfit, are all slated to release music on the Ossington Rose imprinted next year.

Flower Child also consists of guitarist Yurko, who has recorded or toured with Nelly Furtado, Kim Mitchell, and Amanda Stott, among others, as well as drummer Wally Walden, an Irishman who has now moved to Canada to play with the band full time, and bassist Kyle Texeira, a Burlington, Ont. native.
