  • The aster can bring down the latest Exocet missiles. I think it can handle 60/70's russian missiles.

  • Lol you know fuck all! They are great ships.

I think so too, The AB's are a great all around design and don't lose much if any in the AWD mode to type 45 especially when it comes to radar. The aster 15 and 30 though is a great weapons system. I'm sure we could have adopted aegis to work with Aster in the AB's too.

  • looks like the royal navy are starting to do things differant, so this protects the skys, the carrers, when complete do most the attacking and defending the fleet an dont forget about the elite of the royal navy, the subs, the new astute is no push over an trafalger is still very good, who we planning on fighting with all this kit, or they planning on making big canal into centre of afganistan to help us troops. serious note the navy are awsome an deseve the best, royal britaina for ever

  • The Type 45 is designed to operate in a carrier battlegroup. Its main purpose is to provide area air defence. The task of anti-ship will rest upon the F-35.

  • "Its sad they cut corners on this ship and don't have surface to surface missiles"

True, but do you know how many harpoon missiles we have fired in anger? Not a single one in thirty years

  • The Japanease did this. their license built Arleigh Burkes are known as the Kongo class. but I'm sure you are aware of this. Congrats on getting bigger Carriers.

  • That statement is a copout. Equiping for a single function was the choice of penny pinchers who were too cheap to fit sonar/torpedos/missiles. It was built to fit them, and even has the space for them reserved for them. Its not that the extra space was used for air warfare equipment... its just empty. Saying "its an AWD" is thus nonsensical.

The 45 has the ability to be more, it has the space set aside to be more. It is just the parliament is too cheap to finance it properly, which I find sad.

  • Arleigh Burkes are old tech now(20 year old design) and need double the crew that a Type 45 needs. SAMPSON is WORLD CLASS and is designed to protect the carriers and/or the amphibs from air attack.

The FSC will be the multi role ships for the RN. They'll even get a stretched version of the Type 45 with a much cheaper radar system that will have two helicopters and, hopefully, tomahawk or storm shadow fitted. Will most certainly have torpedoes and harpoon.

  • IT's an AWD

  • 15 arleigh burkes would have been an idea, but they need more man power and this could lead to more money than for new destroyers. type 45 aint a half hearted attempt you know it will be the most advanced destroyer until the zumahwat class si built - usa building only 3 of these btw :p

  • I really can't see why the Navy didn't just but 15 Arleigh Burkes off the Americans and used the money they would have saved in building these to recruit the extra man power need to man them. That way we wouldn't have ended up with 6 half hearted attempts at destroyers. Before anyone chirps up, I do know what I'm talking about, 12 years in the RN says so!
