These guys are Wak Wak Djunggi, meaning Black Crow Fire (the equivalent of Yothu Yindi, child-and-mother, Black Crow being Dhuwa and Fire being Yirritja) in the Djinang language of north-central Arnhem Land.

Dancer is Michael Dawu who also stars in the Ten Canoe movie. Bobby Bununggurr is one of the singers, he's the one with the funky jacket, you go Bobby! And Jimmy Djamanba is the other singer, in red shirt and vest.

Djamanba and Bununggurr were the first 2 Yolngu people from Arnhem Land whom I met, in the early 1990s. I became Djamanba's brother and Bununggurr's uncle. If it weren't for these guys, I wouldn't be on the journey I am on today.

The rest of the Wak Wak Djunggi mob include Sebastian Jorgensen, Allen Murphy, Sally Grice, Peter Mumme, and others - a bunch of really talented musicians!

  • In case you are wondering, that's the Gurrumattji (Magpie Goose) dance and song in the middle of this clip, the traditional piece with only voice, clapsticks and didgeridoo.

  • Ha! I was in the small but appreciative audience for this show. It was mind-blowing - a truly magical experience though the video sound doesn't do justice to the yidaki and the harmonies. Seb and Pete and Bobby and Jimmy are all legends. Encore!

  • Hey Scott! Glad you liked it! Cheers!

  • this energy from this music amazingly resonates right into my heart chakra and down my arms so beautifully. wow. thank you for posting for those of us who cannot sit in your audience.

  • I have a wonderful album I recorded of SEB, never released. best guitarist in Australia bar none. Email him and ask for release. Just wonderful. He'd run rings around his contemporaries such as John Williams.
