China isn't totalitarian anymore. It has gone through 30 years of uninterruppted democratization and analysts predict that it will be come a democracy in 2020.

The modern government is the best government in all of China's history, according to analysts.

From the continued imprisonment of political dissenters (most recently Guo Quan in 2009), to the oppression of Tibet, to the forced one child policy, to the single party system, the oppression of religion (communist party members must be atheists by law), and not to mention the thousands employed to filter out any anti-Chinese content on the Internet, plus the recent hacking of Googles e-mail servers, it's impossible to call china anything other than an evil totalitarian regime.

Update:

The number of dissidents imprisoned each year has gone down from hundreds to one or two. That is amazing improvement, if you see it.

Tibet? india just recently applauded China on 50 years of democratic reform. Go see it. Panchen Lama has also said that improvements were unbelievable.

Religion? Christians are now ranked higher in freedom in China. China will become the world's largest Christian nation in 2050.

Internet censorship has gone down from 97 to 85 in 2 years.
