David Aarons & the NIU Philharmonic world premiers the ochestral arrangment of Visit to Hell live at Northern Illinois University (NIU) as one of four 2011 concerto competition winners within the NIU school of music . The music was originally written by Liam Teague, assistant professor of music and co-director of the NIU steelband Nothern Illinois University, as a solo piece for tenor pan. The music was recently orchestrated by Jamie Whitmarsh
NIU is one of the few institutions in the world at which students may pursue music degrees (Bachelors and Masters) with the steelpan as the major instrument of choice.
The NIU Philharmonic has a long, well-earned reputation for excellence, and is thriving as an integral part of the NIU School of Music.
The Philharmonic plays five orchestral concerts each season, in addition to two performances of a fully-staged opera production with the Opera Workshop each spring.
Faculty members from the School of Music often appear as guest soloists with the Philharmonic in performance, and each season also features a concert of winners from our annual concerto competition.
Students in the Philharmonic are exposed to a vast array of repertoire each season, from the great standards of past centuries to the most exciting music of today.
The skills fostered in the Philharmonic—individual musical excellence, collaboration, and the synthesis of skills acquired in all other School of Music courses—serve students well as they continue throughout their careers.
