  • Thanks for the responses. Again, this was so helpful! The whole process went so smoothly I was amazed. Calming myself first so Cleo didn't catch my upset was key I think. I'm not sure if I can get the Renal LP here (Canada) but will look for it). We're in the very early stages and hopefully this will get her eating normally again but just knowing how to do this if necessary is great.

  • @brainkidmusic Hey I'm in Canada also :). Experiment with what Cleo likes. Low phosphorus is your best choice.

Knowing how to assist feed can save your cats life. I am sure Cleo will get eating great in know time.

  • A tip I picked up from anotehr video was to have the cat between me and the arm of the couch so she can't move, or not much anyway, That's helped a lot to start off with.

  • @brainkidmusic Yes I did also mention that in my video. I can't express enough that most cats don't start assisted feed behaving like the cat you see in the video. I went through her not wanting to open her mouth to constantly struggling to get away ect.. . Never in a million years did I think I could do this.... A little time and patients and look where Toady and I are today. So keep at it it my take a little time but they do come around.

  • Once you figuer out how much pumpkin is needed you can then caluculate how much to added to your blended food. This may vary if you blend up more than a days worth of food let say two days then you would put in double the dose that is needed for one day and so on. Hope this helps.

  • I know the amount of pumpkin that achieves the desired effect for Toady ( about 1 teaspoon daily). When starting this off with your cat I would go 1/2 teaspoon daily divided into however many meals are feed over the coarse of a day ( NOT a ½ teaspoon in every meal).. Slowly work your way up to a total of 1 teaspoon daily if needed, or decrease if needed. You will know when you have given to much or to little as the stool will be too soft or to hard.

  • @brainkidmusic I mix the k/d with renal LP (Toady seems to like this combination is the only reason I do this). As far as the pumkin it is dosed to effect so that Toady doesn't get constipated. Kidney cats tend to have problem in this area and the pumkin helps to avoid this.

  • This was incredibly helpful, thanks so much. Two questions:

    - how much pumpkin do you use for a can of k/d or a/d?

    - what is the small can on your counter next to the k/d? Is that part of the "recipe"?

  • Thank you so much for showing us how easy this can be. I was certainly much calmer and so was my kitty Java. Assist feeding went much more quickly. We both appreciate it!

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. My cat had "fatty liver" and was very much underweight and jaundiced. The vet wanted me to put in a feeding tube, and I would have, had I not seen this video. I told my vet that I had watched a video online and that the syringe feedings were going better, so she let me continue trying for another week. It only got better from there and eventually my cat Smokey gained back the weight he lost. He is back to his old self now, chasing our other cat!
