Pope Addresses Sex Scandal: But its not enough!!!

Pope Benedict the XVI finally addresses the pedophile priest scandal in the Roman Catholic Church to the American public and privately with the victims.

However, just talking about the fact that there is a problem is not enough!

thanks for your reponse! christopher hitchens and richards dawkins are trying to get the pope arrested under international law, but i agree it is extremely unlikely that he will be prosecuted. however, i think attempts like these are necessary to challenge the power of the vatican. sexual abuse should not be dealt as an internal matter, its a crime

@lambofpaul I can not believe that the Vatican issued a statement on the popes behalf saying that they are only required to tell authorities of a case of sexual abuse "if the law requires it"

fathernathan, what are your views on the possibility of arresting the pope under international law for his coverup of this scandal? i contend that this would be the best thing for the catholic church in the long run because the vatican seems to believe they are above criminal law. why should the catholic church be able to decide their own fate? child sexual abuse is still a crime no matter how much praying for healing one can do.

@lambofpaul I think it would be nearly impossible to arrest and try the pope under international law for something like this. Those types of conditions under the UN exist for arresting and removing from power individuals like Hitler. However, I do wish that something could be done. I do wish that the pope would stop hiding and also hiding others and I wish he would demand and live by full disclosure.

Really. The Holy Father should be above these issues. I am an ordnary Catholic and also unAmerican (you call us aliens). Let's get this straight. This is an all out attack on our Catholic church. You are getting attacked. Why? Becuase you live in the United States. They hate Catholics there. I personally think the Catholic Church and Catholics should get away from the US. I would definitely not go there, as I would be subjected to persecution also.

@SugarTomAppleRoger The United States does not hate Catholics or people from other countries. I have a number of people at my congregation who are not American born citizens and are treated with respect.

@kiwichristian2009 It is a difficult decision. I cannot see any benefit to thevictim or anyone else of going to the authorities. As for being excommunicated for repeating the allegation, that seems very strange. I just hope the Church has sorted out this problem. Personally, I don't understand men who want to have fantasies towards children. I think that paedophilia has all sorts of degrees of seriousness also.

The document recommended that rather than reporting sexual abuse to the relevant legal authorities, bishops should encourage the victim, witnesses and perpetrator not to talk about it. @theLordIovesusaII The main problem here is that the roman catholic "church" is the only organization that has offered peverts of every stripe and pedophiles in particular a career, protection and access to children. Over time this has led to more and more perverts being attracted to the Church.

The reality today is that many serious catholics consider themselves to be "true christians" You just need to see youtube videos of Michael Voris who on his tv catholic program said "Not only are catholics christians, but the true catholic church is the original, authentic faith." And Vic Scaravilli, the catholic apologist, also said the same.

@opsvideo2008 You are incorrect. Every Catholics I have known has called themselves Catholics. The people who call themselves Christians are normally Americans who have a fundamentalist, right wing and Catholic baiting agenda. Our greatest ever Catholic, John Fitzgerald Kennedy never called himself a Christian but was always proud of his Catholic faith. The KKK go further than calling themselves Christians. They say they are the defenders of Christianity.
