That's not what you were said at all! You infered that this lad sounded like he was playing a 'shoe box with strings'?
He has one up on you, his guitar playing and technique are impeccable, that is something you will never match with the time you have left on God's green earth!

i'm not saying I could play as well as this technically - all i'm saying is that it might be nice if you could remember the melody after listening to it. Its just a comment not a personal attack

Kottke also plays six-string. The version I've most heard of this song is played on a six-string.

maybe i'm growing old but didn't songs used to have a melody and a theme and guitars used to sound like guitars and not shoe boxes strung with elastic bands

I'd say this song does have a theme. I don't know if it can be considered a melody because it is ultimately carried by chords, but that's dont to create depth with a solo instrument. And there are even variations on that theme! And it sounds pretty musical to me.
And since I'm now being held to higher production values, I'll consider this my rite of passage from hobbyist to amatuer! Would you like to make a donation so I can purchase a decent microphone?
