Saturday March 12th, 2011 Madison Capitol of Wisconsin. 120,000 Protesters take to the streets in the cold, blustery day to support the freedom of citizens to unionize in all professions. There were farmers, lawyers, doctors, homeless, carpenters, government workers, entrepreneurs, and, of course, teachers. Citizens and immigrants from every walk of life. The firefighters and police union rights were not suppressed in the controversial bill to take away public union rights. Walker considered them allies as they had endorsed him as gubernatorial candidate. Walker didn't announce his true union busting plans until after he had won the election, when he did, the police and firefighters overwhelmingly supported those on the side of union rights. Not a single arrest has been made throughout the entire 3 weeks of constant protest and sleep-ins at the capitol. Non-violent, peaceful protests are a powerful force to be reckoned with in the 21st century. The energy here was positively electric even after a major setback the day before when the anti-union bill was signed into law. This crowd seems to recognize its power and is self assured, a sight which will bode ill for the Rebublican majority who passed the bill without compromise. A highly organized recall movement by the pro-union side is greatly out-canvasing the republicans. The atmosphere feels positively electric, in awe of direct democracy; the feeling the public has spoken out against the tactics, message and messengers of this government power grab. We demands freedom and know we have the responsibility to ask for it.
