Because the United States are a collection of more-or-less autonomous States who have voluntarily signed on to the Constitution of hte United States. And no one (Puerto Rico, for instance) would sign on if they believed that their State would have zero say in the election of Pres. The College strengthens the vote of the smaller States.

You didn't really answer the question. I think the answer is to reduce voter fraud. Preregistration also makes things easier, allowing people to clear out one large paper jam before the big day. This makes things run much smoother on election day.

Americans serve the throne too , to understand it,all of your presidents are related and/or are agents of the throne of England.but you were fed the fairy tale of how a band of farmers dressed in rags defeated the mighty British at the height of their power although the treaty signed by KG3rd shows that he demanded everything and the founding fathers groveled and even though you pay London through the Federal reserve and IRS for the use of their money you do not even have your own money
