Orbital Corporation Limited has developed FlexDi technology that enables engine manufacturers to develop one engine that can burn different fuel types through simple changes to the fuel system. This opens up the potential for Gasoline, Ethanol, Methanol, CNG and Hydrogen systems to be installed in the same base engine resulting in an engine that meets global emissions and fuel supply demands. FlexDi reduces engineering costs and brings the reality of a single engine to handle all fuels and combustion requirements. For more info on this technology go to: www.flexdi.com or www.orbitalcorp.com.au

  • can't run it on as many fuels as my steam engine

  • @lynel1985 this system is allready being used by hirth motors on 2 cycles for the light aircraft

  • @burkeyturkey2000 any engine willrun on hydrogen you have to adjust the timing u can see them on youtube

  • The FlexDI engine is spark-ignited. Even heavy fuels like Kerosene (JP5, JP8 and JetA1) and Diesel can be ignited with a spark plug because the fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber with compressed air. This breaks up the fuel into small molecules which are easy to ignite. The engine can burn heavy fuels or gasoline.

  • hydrogen has a tendancy to combust very early when contacting the spark plug (before its activated) for this reason hydrogen cannot be used in any internal combustion engine in which the intake phase will allow the fuel to conntact the spark plug. So hydrogen can be used in rotary engines in fact mazda is already in the process of making a hydrogen rotary engine

  • the energy efficient light bulb Going Green=Going Broke..

  • i dont think this engine will run deisel. By design its one fuel that requires the engine to be too different from the other fuelling types. From what i can fathom its just the injectors that are being flogged on about. The engine is just some GDI engine that would be designed with the FLEXDI injector opening. Its not just about changing injectors as well. By design the engine may be able to easily be switched between mulptle fuel types, but it doesnt mean any of them will be efficient

  • i don't understand either, how can an engine switch from petrol to diesel?

and if a car can already be modified to run on LPG or CNG then why can't it be modified for Hydrogen the same way?

  • after this i still dont understand what is being flogged here. I mean it says you only have to change the fuel injection system components between differing fuel types but what seems to be forgotten is manufactuerers could do this now, they just dont want too. There is too much money is making specialy components that are hard to be made generically.
