Be grateful they stole it. If not ,myself and others would have no idea the song even existed. Subsequently, we would have never found this version. Its beautiful He works in mysterious ways.

@ WiseGuysDogs - the way that u wrote your comment shows that u are the biggest racist on earth. listening to the version in english, u will know that the tune, lyrics and rhythm doesn't even suits or corresponds with the western style. anyone can sing it black or white but also anyone listening to it will automatically have a raw feeling of africa.
with racism - black ppl cannot be racist. black ppl can have prejudice against whites for all the crimes that happened hundreds of yrs back. greetz!

Both versions sound very different to me, maybe the similarity is found in the falsetes.

The whole country of China steals from America every day. Do you hear any of the black racist in America say anything about that? hell no But let O.J. Simpson murder a 24 year old white waiter or his white wife and its the WHITE man trying to keep him down. A child molester like Michael Jackson have little boys in his house and in his bed and the black racist like Louis Farakahn are silent. It is hard to feel sorry for black people for being mistreated when you see how they treat each other

Its just more black racism ... every time some artist does a tune that Little Richard did or Bo Diddly did they claim it was stolen.. they of course, never tell you that the original artist gets paid a lot of money. Of course not... Black people are as racist as any people on our planet. They claim white people owe them something because of slavery in the past. Yet slavery exist now in Africa. You can bet Jesse Jackson and asswipes like him will never go to Africa and protest slavery there.
Why use terms like "steal" and "restitution." Instead, say "the origins of..." Did Peter Paul and Mary "steal" 'Michael row the Boat' or Bo Diddley steal the "traditional" blues riffs he used (and possibly complete songs) from older bluesmen who had used them long before his birth, and ALSO DIED PENNYLESS. Should artist ask for restitution for the butcher of great songs by rappers who don't and can't even play the song they rip nor change it in anyway. Evry1 get over your self importance!!

The Tokens did "in fact" steal this traditional song written and sung by Solomon Linda. In fact they claimed that "they" almighty Septic Tanks were the ones that gave this song world-wide appeal ... forgetting that the original artist died a pauper while so many enriched themselves from his original. In any language - that's stealing. It was Pete Seeger who learnt the truth and made every effort to create restitution to the Linda family.
