ON THE 22nd FEBRUARY 2011 A DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE HIT CHRISTCHURCH CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE AND LOSS OF LIFE.
THE HISTORIC MONA VALE HOMESTEAD WITHIN THESE GARDENS IS CLOSED BECAUSE OF SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE SUSTAINED, DUE TO THIS EARTHQUAKE. THE GARDENS REMAIN RELATIVELY INTACT, AND HAVE BECOME A SANCTUARY TO VISITORS AND LOCALS IN THIS EARTHQUAKE HIT REGION. CHRISTCHURCH CONTINUES TO EXPERIENCE AFTERSHOCKS.
