For our annual Missions Conference we typically bring in many of the full time missionaries that we support. The focus for this piece on short-term missions simply lined up with a minor focus at this event of encouraging people to go out and provide some practical helps to some of these full-timers out there. I agree that local ministry and outreach is just as (if not more) important, so we are also very active in our community, in addition to our world-wide missions focus.
The real mission is out in your workforce, in schools etc.; the short term-missions to Africa, I have learned, is not for THEIR benefit as much as it is for YOURS. I sponsor people not to help ignorant Africans, but to strengthen the faith of the people that are being sent. There's no sense in going to Africa when your own colleagues are frequenting the local strip club, doing drugs, watching porn etc. Hence, the number one reason of going is to: increase your own faith, not theirs.
