The term "Gold Star Mothers" has historical significance dating back to 1928. Service flags with gold stars were used to show that a family had a son that had died in service. Mothers of slain servicemen came to be known as Gold Star Mothers. In 1940, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated the last Sunday in September as "Gold Star Mothers Day" to recognize and commemorate the sacrifice these courageous women have made on behalf of our nation.
