Are there distinct differences between the east and the west?

Author and apostate, Ibn Warraq, asserts that the west is built upon three pillars that the east lack: rationalism, universalism, and self-criticism

According to Warraq, these are the qualities that build an open and free society, where dissidence have a place, next to religious freedom and equality.

Ibn Warraq is a pseudonym being used after death threats against him for his criticism of islam. For his own safety, and that of his relatives, he can not reveal his identity.
