Fifteen hundred Moriori were slaughtered, many cannibalised, but their spirit lives on in the artwork they engraved on to nature - but for how long?
Only a few generations ago the people of the Chatham Islands - the Moriori - were all but wiped out by invading Maori tribes. The Moriori left behind a small but important legacy carved in the bark of the Chatham Island trees, and now those trees are under serious threat. "These are treasures that the country can ill afford to lose", says Mana Cracknall, whose ancestor was murdered, "it is an archaeologists dream, the artwork of the Moriori, it's unique". As the weathered trees start to crumble, how long until the history of the Chatham Islands is lost forever?

Amazing...another piece of history I had no idea about.

This man has such an amazing manor and peace about what happened to his people. Even the older lady only wanted the young to know the history of her people and not to poison them with hate. I think a few people on here could do with spending some quality time with both of them.

@rosey312 Yes the racist brits that slaved, rapped, murdered and rewrote history to stay in complete control are the people that own you and the people your brainwashed ass listens to so I feel we should end it there. @the0th Comprehend much? Or are you disputing the numerous cannibalism archeological sites that have been documented throughout Europe including Germany and France? No one is justifying murder or violence. It is interesting and a pity you dont seem to have the same amount of outrage for the English Govt. that murdered more than all indigenous Maori tribes combined and with their policies 'legally" turned the land over to the very group that killed the Moriori.

@whiteanimous I have read countless documentation that dont add up from the European part of my ancestors history.I also was told about my ancestors history that was passed down from generation to generation. There is no political motivation coming from my point of view at all and my only influence is the truth and justice. I know what happened to my ancestors as it happened to many other nationality throughout history with these slave monsters. I can careless if your thoughts dont match mine

but they are different, i can't decide what to beleive. some people say the reason the genetics only matched modern maori was because the real moriori died out years ago. or maybe it was a lie? who knows. it's so hard do dig up the truth from that country!

This is the first time ive seen anything related to the Moriori.They're a lot more similar to Maori then I thought; I wonder if this has always been the case.
