This is a black swallowtail caterpillar forming its chrysalis, or pupating. This video shows what took about 20 minutes in less than 1 minute. You can see the "segments" of its body getting pushed to the bottom as the skin splits and the chrysalis is revealed. Then it squirms to get the shed skin off the bottom of the chrysalis. It's got to be one of the most amazing phenomena in nature. There's also video of another caterpillar pupating on my website www.WildlifeTheater.com.

I hope Mr. Dawkins knows at least biology, as for other fields he's a proud ignorant.

Evolutionary biologists are beginning to work out the mystery of how a complex life cycle like caterpillar- chrysalis - butterfly evolved. If you want to read the details try Richard Dawkins excellent books like " The ancestors tale " or Talkdesign org or Evolutionfairytale website, Also try PZ Meyers website Pharyngula or Potholer54 channel on youtube for more excellent videos

Anyone know where I can find a clip of a catapillar turning into a cocoon in this style? Except without the time lapse, in five minutes and inside a woman's kitchen?

Thank you for posting such a useful video. This is a more complex activity than making a Boeing 787 dreamliner. How? No human can make one cell (let alone a buterfly) out of basic elements and give it life. To find out more about this ultra intelligent being who makes this happen with ease, type allaahuakbar on google, go to the page and click on the skeleton at the bottom left.

I once saw a caterpillar transform into a chrysalis. It just took over a minute. Probably because it was a different type of caterpillar.
