Venezia (IPA /veˈnɛʦ:ja/; in veneziano e in veneto la pronuncia del nome è /veˈnɛs:ja/ e sono usate anche le grafie alternative Venexia, Venessia, Venesia e Venezsia[1]; in latino Venetiæae[2]) è la principale città del Veneto e dell'Italia nord-orientale, capoluogo della provincia omonima e della regione Veneto. E' catalogata come patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO.
La città è situata, insieme a numerose piccole isole, all'interno della Laguna di Venezia, nella parte nord-occidentale del Mare Adriatico. Il suo comune conta 268.736 abitanti [3], di cui 62.000 circa nella città vera e propria[4], 176.000 circa nelle città di terraferma Mestre e Marghera e circa 31.000 nelle varie isole della sua laguna.
Storicamente soprannominata la Serenissima o anche la Dominante[5], è stata per più di un millennio capitale della Repubblica di Venezia.

Venice (Italian: Venezia, Venetian: Venezsia, Latin: Venetia) is a city in northern Italy, the capital of region Veneto, and has a population of 271,251 (census estimate January 1, 2004). Together with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000). Venice has been known as the "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Bridges", and "The City of Light".
The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 62,000 in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazione of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.
The Venetian Republic was a major maritime power and a staging area for the Fourth Crusade, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the Renaissance and up to the end of the 17th century.
Venice, regarded by many as "the most romantic city"[1] is the most touristed city in the world,[2] with an estimated 15 million foreigners visiting in 2005.[3]

Venedig [veˈneːdɪç] (ital. Venezia [veˈnɛtːsi̯a] resp. venezianisch Venexia oder Venezsia [veˈnessi̯a]) ist eine Stadt im Nordosten Italiens an der adriatischen Küste, Hauptstadt der Region Venetien und der Provinz Venedig. 2006 hatte die Stadt 268.934 Einwohner, davon 176.621 auf dem Festland, 30.702 innerhalb der Lagune und 61.611 im historischen Zentrum. Die Stadt erstreckt sich in Nordost-Italien entlang der Adria über 117 kleine Inseln in der Lagune Venedigs. Diese Salzwasserlagune liegt zwischen den Mündungen des Po in Süden und des Piave im Norden. Die Inseln sind mit über 400 Brücken untereinander verbunden.
Venedig und seine Lagune steht seit 1987 auf der UNESCO-Liste des Weltkulturerbes.

Venecia (en italiano Venezia, en veneciano Venezsia y en veneciano antiguo Venexia), la ciudad de los canales, es la capital de la región de Véneto. Está situada sobre un conjunto de islas que se extiende en una laguna pantanosa en el mar Adriático, entre las desembocaduras de los ríos Po (sur), y Piave (norte), en el nordeste de Italia.
Venecia está compuesta por 120 pequeñas islas unidas entre sí por unos 400 puentes. Se llega a Venecia desde tierra firme por el Puente de la Libertad que accede al Piazzale Roma.
Desde su fundación la ciudad ha sufrido los efectos de inundaciones periódicas. En la actualidad la ciudad se considera en grave amenaza por las repetidas inundaciones. En primavera y otoño tiene lugar el acqua alta ('marea alta') dos veces al día y la plaza de San Marcos se inunda de agua hasta tal punto que tienen que colocar pasarelas de madera sobre las que la gente tiene que andar en fila india. El gobierno italiano prepara un proyecto, denominado Moisés, para levantar unos diques móviles que se cerrarían en caso de aumento del nivel del agua del mar.
