"Spirit" @ the beginning just refers to the great spirit. Wakan Tanka, don't you know natives american history and culture ?

@snillocgrom In all honesty the man is very seclusive and not much is known about him. I think his father is of assyrian descent and Christian. I think his mother was Catholic though, that's where his roots came in.

@Scorberg I thought Malick's family was Syriac Christian and just sort of "adopted" catholicism when his grandfather came to the US.

There was more inter-tribal warfare then people think.

@funkeykong Just because you study philosophy and not theology doesn't mean that you are not inclined more towards religion. Bishop Fulton Sheen wrote his dissertation on the Blessed Mother but got his PHD in philosophy and not theology. It is a plain fact: Malick is a Catholic and always was. Look it up online (it may take you a while though). Malick was going to write part of his dissertation on Heidegger, who was an existentialist, but was influenced by Plato, Aristotle & even St. Augustine.

LOVE EACHOTHER ....FOR X BEING SNAKE.

Dear Scorberg, Malick actually studied philosophy at University. Do u realise what that means in terms of what u have just claimed to be Malick's underlying message in the film? You may be misplacing your views with Malick's here.
-
@Scorberg I can't reason u'r view cause I've forgotten the film, but very insightful observation dude

You can see why the natives of this continent fought so hard to keep the land. So untouched and wild and free. Now people are rebelling against their own civilization cause it brings us so much sorrow and doubt.
yeah there's no talking trees
