In 1928, Jews from across the Soviet Union traveled to the Russian Far East. They were trying to build themselves a promised land. They brought their families, set up schools and created a community there. It took years of hard work but finally they built a capital city. Its called Birobidzhan. All the money sent to the USSR went into Stalin's coffers, of course. The Birobidzhan support orgs in Canada lasted into the early 50's. The creation of Israel rather killed the movement, which had 10K members in Canada at its height.

It's a pity that all the comments seem to about things other than Birobidzan because it's an interesting part of Soviet history. I first heard of the place back in the 90's when I attended a talk at the U of Calgary given by a U of Toronto history prof. He had taught himself to read Yiddish and went through all the Canadian Yiddish papers of the 30's, 40's and 50's that related to the JAR. There was a big movement in Canadian Jewish circles back then to send money to the USSR for the JAR.

@Mankindfails Research before you speak. "Goyim" does not mean "not Jewish". It means, in Hebrew, nations. In the Bible, Jewish people are called a "goy kadosh", a holy nation.
