A conversation with Chris Pyke, Vice President of Research for the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), and Lane Burt, Technical Policy Director for USGBC's Advocacy Team, to hear about the Green Building Information Gateway (GBIG). The Green Building Information Gateway is a visual, GIS based, tool for understanding where green buildings are located and how they are performing. Currently, the Green Building Information Gateway tracks all LEED buildings (via their scorecard) and all Energy Star buildings (via their score) in the US. By aggregating and providing tools to analyze this data, the GBIG could have large implications for green building policy, as well as the market for energy and water efficient technologies. The tool could be used as the outlet for states and localities that have energy disclosure mandates to communicate publically, or for federal facilities that need to comply with the requirements of the Executive Orders on! building performance. Furthermore, the tool could compare the actual performance of a building to its initial design specifications, in order to track and ensure proper building management. Ultimately, the GBIG could be used to evaluate the individual performance of specific investments in energy efficiency, providing granular information for owners and designers on how to construct and manage high performance buildings.
