In September 2000 - during the United Nations Millennium Summit -189 nations adopted and 147 heads of state and governments signed the Millenium Declaration which containes the actions and targets that draw from the MDGs. These are 8 goals to be achieved by 2015 that respond to the world's main development challenges.
