Monarchos won the 2001 Kentucky Derby in the 2nd fastest time. Secretariat holds the record to this day. This footage is from October 2007 at Claiborne Farm, KY
Amen on Joe being a great guy. He was also Unbridled's groom and stood an around the clock vigil after his surgery. You could tell from the way he retold that episode that he has an abiding love for the horses in his care. If everyone involved with thoroughbreds were more like Joe, horse racing would enjoy a lot more popularity in this country......
I had my pic made with him at Claiborne Farm in July of 2007. There is a book about him called 'Horse of a Different Color' by Jim Squires, his owner.
The groom in the vid is Joe Peel-great guy! Met him a few times, as well as Monarchos - even got to give Mon a few smooches! Knew his sire, Maria's Mon (who I nicknamed "Me Me"), quite well. Me Me passed away the other year, but he was the most gentle stallion in the breeding shed (almost like doing a ballet), and he always nuzzled the ladies afterwards. I remember him smelling of apple shampoo, and how he'd noodle around for carrots in his feed. Monarchos is very sweet like his daddy!
I saw his daughter run on Derby day this year, I forgot what race it was, but she is the spitting image of her daddy.
