This flight means something really special to me, since it was my very first DC-9 flight. For me as a German, it is not very easy to get on a DC-9 and I was always desperate to fly on one.
During the time I lived in the US I checked out nwa.com for some DC-9 flights and I found a round trip DFW-MEM-ORD-DTW-MEM-DFW for a very reasonable fare. Of course I did not hesistate, went ahead and booked. On an unusually sunny October day in 2007 I had the very best experiences in my career as an aviation fan-3 rides on a DC-9 in a row.

I especially enjoyed the ride on the 1968 built rare -40 series (N751NW (cn 47115/261) ) that you can see in this video.
There were only about 30 passengers on this short flight from Memphis to Chicago-ORD and I was one of the very few of them sitting in the rear part of the plane.
The engine sound and power of this old lady really impressed me, it was an awesome flight done by a very professional crew. Thank you so much NWA for making this day possible and long live the DC-9!

Sit back, relax and enjoy the first part of this wonderful flight!

Sorry for the spelling error in the titles at the beginning, I somehow messed up to spell "MC Donnell Douglas".

  • i've flown a lot of md-80s, but idt i've set foot on a dash 9. quick, what's the difference?

  • @snoopyloopy the fuselage design of the MD-80 and the DC-9 is similar, the DC-9-50 has an equally long fuselage as the MD-87, but not as long as the Md-82-88. the other Dc-9 series are even shorter than the Md-87.

further differences are the engines: the md-80 is a newer airplane with more modern engines which are also quieter and more fuel efficient. there are also differences when you look into the cockpit. Some newer Md-80s have a "Screwdriver Tailcone", Dc-9s don't.

  • As long as it is maintained well there is not one difference in the safety compared to newer planes. Otherwise it would not be allowed to fly passengers.

These DC-9 are runners they go forever.

  • What time of the did you take this flight?

Just noticed the two Fed Ex jets.

  • about 9:30AM I guess.

  • Great Video! Love the DC-9!

  • Your just like me...whenever I fly on a DC-9 or MD-80-88...I always request a seat in back so I can be close to the sweet music of those Pratt&Whitney Engines...I always get strange looks from ticket agents when I request a seat near the Engines. Although I dont have video, I have audio recording of DC-9 flights I took during the 1970s of flights on Southern,Ozark,Delta and Eastern...ohhh do I love that sound...thanks so much for posting this video.

Geiler Flug!

  • You did a good job in filming this video. You did the whole nine yards, boarding, finding a seat, and even the pushback process! I noticed some of the passengers were already asleep when you were going to your seat. Finally, I loved the takeoff scene. I guess all of the DC-9's have that "buzz" sound when taking off. Great job once again!

  • Great video, and I loved reading your story! Glad you finally got to fly the DC-9...flew them many times with NW. Great plane!

  • Gosh, how I loved and miss the DC-9! What a wonderful airplane!
