From the earliest figurative rock art of the remote Kimberley region of north-western Australia to the mysterious stone statues of Easter Island. Throwing light on the artistic legacy of our ancient ancestors, we travel from the deep caves of Niaux in France to the magnificent carved giraffe of the Sahara, and on to the dawn of the age of the megalith in Europe. In this first series of iLecture documentary films, join us as we explore our prehistoric world.

  • There's no South African rock art here! Its arguably the most beautiful in the world.

  • We have a Bradshaw Foundation film all about the San rock art of south africa. Look on our profile, or the Bradshaw Foundation website.

  • Good video but i would like see the names of the places come up on screen so i could learn where they where.

  • The Bradshaw Foundation website details the locations of rock art from all over the world and includes far more than the samples shown in this film.

  • This is a great clip. However, would have been nice if there had been captions. Lots of kids visit here. Kids with short attention spans who may not be inclined to do lengthy research. Captions could help enlighten them quickly (albeit on a small scale). In any case, thank you for the beautiful pictures.

  • The captions as well as lots more information, including full length iLecture films, animated genetic maps, and galleries of the world's oldest art can be found on the Bradshaw Foundation website. Well worth a look if you are interested in these subjects.

  • Looks like prehistoric anime.

  • how do the images stand the test of time so well? ...weathering etc?

  • Our ancestors didn't have problems with freedom of expression. They simply marked on rocks exactly what they saw to the best of their ability.
