Most have for only 2-4 channels in the back and 2 in the front for your mics only and the rest for midi, but most audio interface, have a fiber light pipe or ADAT for a 8 channel preamp, for expanding analog inputs, which is better then the way this guy show you, as you get 96khz/24bits or 48khz with no loss in audio quality
For most people a audio interface is all you really need, just buy one with the most inputs and with a good DAC, but get one that has a fiber lightpipe.
