This is true. I don't see how you've got thumbs down for this.

There are certainly factors to take into considereation however. The best British ships were targeting French shipping rather than focusing on the U.S. which was considered a minor conflict.

However on more than one occasion U.S. ships simply outperformed their British counterparts and denying this is simply stupid

Except this was made by an Australian director, with lots of British actors. :) In all honesty, the decision WAS to make sure it appealed to American audiences, you're right, but the movie was actually very much a mix of all 20 books, not just the one it was named after. If I remember correctly, Jack does spend most of his time fighting the French. So it's not like they pulled the switch out of nowhere.
