wrong. You need to do what you're saying (rudiments, technique), but it's always good to pull from amazing drummers like Carter.
Don't duplicate him, but try and replicate him.

A new drummer should never try and impersonate other drummers. Look up a set players beginning book. Practice rudiments and tempo, dont try and play dmb... it wont work.

you guys are right, carter is awesome. but a new drummer should not jump into his material yet. start with something simple like ac/dc or the beatles. If u want to see someone as impressive as carter with cool timings and fills check out brann dailor from mastodon. my personal fav.

hey i agree, carter is mind blowing.....if you think this is good, and you understand the drums.....check out seven. its in 7/8 time, but hes done it so well, its hard to pick it up. anyway, take a look

You can't draw comparisons between the bands you guys mention. Completely different styles and periods.
However, I have to say - if you're going to put any of the bands up against DMB --- musically and technically, DMB beats those bands into the ground.
If you're talking image and overall popularity, I can see your point.
I'm with "FleaFunkFan" ... Carter Beauford is a freaking monster... honestly mind-blowing on drums.
