Former Assistant Treasury Secretary Says Americans have been brainwashed
Posted on August 16, 2008 by Chris
Paul Craig Roberts, nationally syndicated columnist and former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan Administration wrote today:

The success of the Bush Regimes propaganda, lies, and deception with gullible and inattentive Americans since 9/11 has made it difficult for intelligent, aware people to be optimistic about the future of the United States. For almost 8 years the US media has served as Ministry of Propaganda for a war criminal regime. Americans incapable of thinking for themselves, reading between the lines, or accessing foreign media on the Internet have been brainwashed.

Anyone who has done even a little research into the Georgian/South Ossetian/Russian conflict understands where Dr. Roberts is coming from with his statement, given the complete misrepresentation of these events by the U.S. media. Most of the headlines you see in major news networks/papers in the U.S. have headlines like this to make Russia appear as the aggresor:

Russia keeps up attacks on Georgia, Yahoo/AP

Russia intensifies attack on Georgia, Washington Times

Eastern Europe Anxious as Russia Attacks Georgia, ABC News

Even the Wikipedia entry makes it clear that Georgia started the conflict by attacking South Ossetia first (Russia later came to South Osettias aid and defence). Optimism in the face of complete lies, lawlessness, and complacency is difficult. While many Americans may continue to lack discernment and/or show indifference/ignorance to national and international politics and politically-motivated events, those that seek truth need to and will still press on and get the word out. Thank you to those who do.
US media is incredibly transparent in its propaganda lies about Russia and Georgia.

The media spin on the Georgia/South Ossetia/Russia thing has been incredible to observe. This has to be the greatest onslaught of propaganda Ive seen in my 40 years as a human. We are repeatedly told that this is a case of Russian aggression resulting in Georgian civilian casualties as Russia perpetrates its atrocities. Georgia is a courageous democracy that was trying to protect its territorial integrity from the bad guys in South Ossetia who have backing from Russia. Now, Bush is standing up for Georgia by demanding Russia get out of Georgia and by sending humanitarian aid. Any history behind the region is ignored. Reports of atrocities by the true aggressors (Georgia of course) are ignored.
Incredibly, the US media has been effective at misinforming its subjects on the subject as I have ascertained by my informal surveying of the minds of some of my fellow workers. See here what sort of severely slanted propaganda we are up against from NBC Nightly News:
It started as a gamble by Georgia, the former Soviet republic and darling of the West: Move quickly into the breakaway pro-Russian enclave called South Ossetia and take back what is legally Georgias. But the plan failed. Instead, Russian forces invaded Georgia last week and crushed Georgian resistance. According to U.S. military officials, Russia is out to decimate the U.S.-trained Georgian armed forces.
As FAIR noted:
Georgias military effortswhich involved, according to reports from Human Rights Watch (8/10/08, 8/14//08) and Western reporters on the scene (Washington Post, 8/12/08), intensive shelling of civilian areasreportedly caused many noncombatant deaths and prompted most of the South Ossetia population to seek safety in Russia. It was this humanitarian crisis, coupled with Georgian attacks on Russian forces in the separatist areas, that Moscow cited as its justification for its military intervention.
Georgias contribution to the escalation of tensions in the region were not completely ignored by U.S. media, but its aggressive actions were often euphemized, as in APs reference to a crackdown by Georgia last week (8/11/08), and were rarely allowed to interfere with the preferred narrative of Georgia as victim of an expansionist Russia.

  • Tragically, outrageous lies, falsehoods, deceptions & frauds via mass media propaganda has become routine in US society, as well as in much of Europe and among the US's allies. This has been evident thruout the Cold War era & since re: US's wars in Korea, SE Asia, then in Central & South Ametrica, in support for Indonesia's genocidal war w. East Timor, support for Israel, the First Gulf War, US/Nato's war on Yugoslavia, support for Honduras's recent para-civil coup -- among many other examples.
