Heart Shaped Bruise: A Jelena Story
By NBBlvrUSA & sunny1girl2sunny3

I was frozen for a minute. My breath stopped and I think my heart did, too. I started stuttering.
"Do you need a friend?" the voice repeated again.
"Uhh uhh who are you?" I asked quickly, hiding my face behind my textbook.
"You should know..." the voice quickly faded away and I opened up the stall door. There was no one. I looked around the whole bathroom, in every stall.
No one.
My breathing picked up and I ran out of the bathroom and back to my first period. The teacher didn't ask any questions on why I wanted to be excused, I think I looked sick. I felt dizzy and sweaty.

At lunch time I was sitting alone at a table under a tree in the rose garden outside. I ate my sandwich all by myself, just taking deep breaths and trying to calm myself. I watched Joe, I learned his name. He was hanging out with a big group of guys, all wearing the same sweatshirt. They must be on the football team or something.
All of a sudden I heard a leaf crunch on the sidewalk near me, and I turned to see a tall slender girl with long brown wavy hair and glasses standing with a tray. She smiled at me.
"Can I sit here?" she asked, smiling at me.
"Uhh sure," I said as I pushed my backpack out of her way and she sat down and started eating her burrito.
"Watching the football team do pushups?" she asked, sorta giggly.
"Yeah, I guess. I'm just daydreaming." I said muffly.
"About what? If you don't mind me asking."
I turned to look at her. "Have you ever had someone really close to you die?"
"Well, I had a dog, but it's not really a person. So I guess not. Why? Is that's what's bothering you? Did your grandma die or something?" she asked.
"N-no, it's not that. I had a really good friend in Texas... her name was Demitria Lovato..."

Flashback to a few months ago in Dallas, TX.
Demi and I were playing hopscotch and jumprope at the local park in the neighborhood, wearing tye dye shirts that we made ourselves and some torn jean shorts. Our knees were bruised from how many times we fell from skateboarding.
We were having a great time, when we got some ice cream and sat down in the grass by the sprinklers near the street.
"You are my best friend, you're like my sister. You really cheered me up after my grandpa died." Demi said, smiling.
A very rare big bright smile spread across my face, "Then I guess we're officially sisters," I laughed.
"I saved up my allowance money to get us something," she said, pulling out a box.
"Ohh Demi you shouldn't have," I said taking a lick of my ice cream.
"Yes of course! You've done so much for me, you're my best friend!" She pulled out a couple of diamond friendship necklaces and gave one to me.
I was amazed at how beautiful the necklace was. I put it around my neck, smiled and hugged her as she put hers on.
"You're the bestest friend I've ever had."
"You are too Selly," she said smiling.
All of a sudden we heard a loud screeching noise. There was a drunk driver driving down the street. He saw us and started driving his car towards us. I screamed.
"Demi, come on!"
Demi threw her icecream down and as she was quickly getting up, she twisted her ankle. She fell onto the grass, rolling down the hill towards the incoming car.
"Demi!" I screamed, trying to run to her to reach her hand. But it was too late, the car ran right over her. She layed there with her eyes closed, her hand clutched to her chest, where the friendship necklace was. Some blood was on her shirt.
I was weak in the knees, I fell down to the grass and crawled to her, crying and shaking.
"This isn't happening.. this isn't happening.." I kept saying to myself over and over again. I checked her pulse. Nothing. Her skin was cold. It happened...
"Nooooo!" I screamed to the sky, crying and punching the grass...

  • My grandfather died two weeks ago, and to be honest, I didn't know him that well.

We didn't get to see him a lot.

And yet I wanted to die when he did.

If my best friend died, I wouldn't have just wanted to, I probably would've killed myself.
